We are currently looking for more volunteers! Adults from the South Nanaimo area are invited to contact Tyler (below) to find out how you can help youth in our community get on bikes!
The Operation Generation Bike Club has been very collaborative and fun this year. We continue to have a space inside John Barsby Community School; a classroom full of bikes and tools! We have given many away, as we teach youth about mechanics and create community within the school.
The Bike Club receives donations of kid’s and adult bikes, and with the help of volunteers, refurbishes them to give away to students! In order to earn a bike, students must come into the club during our open hours (Wednesdays at Lunchtime) and volunteer.
The Rotary Club in Surrey have donated 40 bikes, and there are 20 more on their way! We have fantastic volunteers Frank and Bernie, who have been supporting the club since January.
A past volunteer Craig has been an incredible support for the bike club in facilitating our relationship with Surrey Rotary, and Diamond Delivery who has been transporting the bikes for free. Recently Craig and myself took a visit to Surrey Rotary to meet them face-to-face, and make friends. They have a house full of bikes, and a shop in the bottom; their Rec for Kids Society refurbishes and gives away sporting goods to youth who need them. The top floor also has other sporting equipment; such as hockey gear, roller/in-line skates, baseball equipment and more. Rec for Kids is non-profit Society as well as having charitable status. REC stands for Recycle Equipment and Cycles, they they are always looking for donations.
